What resources exist that describe the relationship between health equity and performance management/quality improvement and how a health department might apply a health equity lens to quality improvement activities?
In our maternal and child health / nutrition services work, we have focused significantly on community (and/or partner) engagement to increase the quality of our overall work as well as to address health inequities. Community engagement is an evidence-based and effective strategy to promote health equity, and aligns nicely in quality improvement efforts with customer satisfaction. I have attached some materials that we have developed to inform staff on how to do community engagement.
Cyndan Gizzi and Jacques Colon at Tacoma Pierce County health department have a great toolbox and examples of QI and equity - they presented at the Open Forum in a concurrent session last May and will be part of a plenary presentation at the Open Forum in October. Will alert Cyndan to this post!
I just gave a presentation at NACCHO Annual about how our health department developed a Health Equity Dashboard that has been integrated into our PQI system. I'd be happy to share my Slide Deck!

Attached, please find the resources that Pamela Russo mentioned in her earlier post -- there is some good information in here about health equity in general, a little bit on connecting health equity and QI, and a lot of great slides. These are all from a presentation at the May 2016 Open Forum. The April 2017 Open Forum will have a pre-conference session on Health Equity as well; although the registration is full and also has a standby list, the materials will be posted after the session and they are sure to be very informative as well. Finally, it would be great to hear back from you, Whitney -- what practices have you implemented around health equity and QI?!
