Practical use and adaptation of PHQIX tools and resources

Hey all - During today's (5/27/2015) PHQIX webinar w/ Grace Gorenflo, we discussed ways for users to adapt PHQIX tools and resources for individual QI efforts. I presented and described 3 examples. Then I then asked the 45+ participants to brainstorm other ideas. Below i've listed my examples as well as the ideas generated during the call. What can you add to the list? Share your ideas by adding a comment to this thread.

My examples: 

1. PHQIX is a “gateway” to the PHQI body of knowledge - Resources available via PHQIX can support the efforts of users to: build QI culture, develop QI plans, carry out QI projects, develop training materials for staff and to continue your professional development.
2. PHQIX is a resource to develop agency QI leaders - Make sure PHQIX is institutionalized in your agency as a resource for emerging QI leaders.
3. PHQIX provides unique access to vetted, practice-based examples - Use creativity to enhance your QI efforts by studying these practice-based examples.

Ideas brainstormed during the call:

Torney Smith: PHQIX provides great examples for us to emulate as we try to address topics found on PHQIX
Jordan-Lindsay Morris: For orientation purposes
Leann Orr: Looking forward to accessing the Community Forum for ideas on how to make QI fun!
Kathie Dyer: Our new QI Plan will require our QI Council to receive 1/4ly inservices related to QI.  As the QI Consultant I will be using these resources for these inservices.
Orlanda Bratlien: Our group used the PDSA cycle in implementing a Process Improvement Book Club during lunch time brown bag sessions. We can provide the members with the PHQIX website
Torney Smith: We have used other agency's Kaisen examples to build support for similar activities in our agency.
Leann Orr: Accessing webinars and other trainings for development and training of a QI team
Kristen Sanders: Having examples of QI projects and going through as a walk through/step by step
Torney Smith: Building staff support for efforts in QI have been bolstered by tools like the memory jogger and certainly using samples from other agency's successes
Torney Smith: When working on a specific topic and using a PHQIX example it would be helpful to contact the people doing that example
Torney Smith: Perhaps we could be encouraged to leave our contact info when submitting an example

Hi Ty, I would also like to add:

- For showcasing projects that we have done and specifically, spotlighting individuals involved in a QI project. This helps boost morale and builds excitement around QI project invovlement (especially for millennials)!

- For connecting/getting advice on QI efforts from others currently in a similar boat, and from those that have past experience with similar efforts.

- For networking with other QI coordinators, since public health QI is still relatively new and it may not be possible to travel to a conference regularly

Not having been part of the original conversation, I'm wondering if you could define "individual QI efforts." Does this mean the individual efforts of a department or the individual efforts of an individual....or could it mean both? 

The reason I ask is because we've put together a Roundtable Discussion for the upcoming Open Forum on the use of Return on Investment (ROI) as an important QI tool and we use ROI for both team-led projects and QI mini-projects that are done by individuals who have identified an improvement need and moved ahead on it without the need for support from others. The "Just Did It" reporting tool provides staff a means to report on improvements they've made that can add up to significant savings. It's a great introduction to QI staff who have not had the opportunity as yet to participate on a QI team.

Thank you for the question.

As you said, I was referring to individual efforts of a department or the individual efforts of a person. In other words, ".. we discussed ways users can adapt PHQIX tools and resources for their QI efforts including: training, QI capacity-building, within the scope of QI projects, etc."

Sounds like a good idea for a round-table at the Open Forum. Good luck!

I would say that PHQIX offers a safe environment to explore, ask questions, obtain peer support, and beg, borrow, and steal great initiatives!  :-) 

Most of all, the support and timely response that you can get from PHQIX from experts and your peers when you are frustrated, need assistance, or just need to explore other avenues for QI work. 

Having this network of folks has been wonderful not only to see the great projects others have done, but to be able to vent and ask for help when needed, as we all know QI doesn't always happen willingly with some as well as overnight...

Our (small rural) Health Dept implemented an electronic medical record within the last year.  We started doing routine PDSA QI activities and using Fishbone diagrams were able to clearly visualize processes and identify redundancies (and there were MANY) as staff shift from paper to electronic.  PDSA is such a simple process and becasue of that I believe staff has become much more comfortable with implementing QI on a daily basis.  

As a result of our findings, we decided to create "user workgroups" that allow staff the time to meet and problem solve different aspects of the EMR (individual groups for billing/reception/scheduling and clinic staff).  The hope is that the groups will establish consistent procedures that will improve overall efficiency. 

PDSA has given staff the confidence they needed to begin the QI process independently - starting with small projects.

I just had a chance to watch the webinar on adapting PHQIX tools/resources.  It's good stuff! 

One idea I had as I was watching the webinar is to assign different resources found on the PHQIX website to members of our Quality Council to profile at our monthly meetings.  Usually we dedicate a little bit of time at our meetings to some type of training. I would love for the Council to be more familar with all the great resources out there!

I would be very interested in seeing the "Just Did it" reporting tool mentioned by 4Sloan.  I think the more we can make QI approachable and inclusive for everyone, the better.  So I am interested in using the tool to include more staff who may not yet be on a QI team.  

Would also be curious to learn more about using ROI as a QI tool.

I used the PHQIX site to identify QI projects that I could use as examples in my Basics of Quality Improvement Course that I did this last summer. I ended up showing Georgia's North Central Health District example of their PDSA approach to addressing low HIV testing rates at routine and annual visits. I see Gurleen is on this thread so I wanted to post a big thank you for those from your district that posted this example on PHQIX. I had enough information from the website that I didn't even need to email anyone to ask for clarification.
