Including Youth in QI Process

Hi All,

Have any of you incorporated youth in the quality improvement or accreditation processes? If so, to what extent? Also, do you have any advice or suggestions for working with youth on this?

We've had interns assist with researching best practices and helping to develop survey questions. While developing a training class on the 10 essential services, we tested out some of our activities on our youth group prior to offering the class to employees.

Only to the extent that our public health department works closely with nursing and other students. We expose them to QI as much as possible during their clinical experiences in our department. We have also had interns help us with some of the data collection and present it to our staff. They have come back to us and told us how glad they were to have been exposed to it. It looks great on their resumes!

Something we have considered doing and have plans in the future to include is to try and partner with the Boy and Girl Scouts. I believe the information we would gain from them is invaluable. We have also involved them with writing essays and for the younger children contest drawings on certain topics to see what they come up with. For example, what does a healthy community look like to you? Youth can be very powerful conveying messages to certain parties within your community.
