Getting Leadership Buy-in

Tue, 12/15/2015 - 13:04 -- gkroberts

Hi Everyone,

We know that gaining leadership support is important, but do you have any resources or tips on how to get leadership support for QI?

I found this informative article on the NICHQ website titled "8 Tips for Engaging Leaders in Your Project" that I thought might be useful for the phqix community.

Here is a follow-up aticle about Sustaining Leadership Invovlement in QI Projects. The main points are summarized below:

  1. Transferring leadership of the inititave over to others ensures that the changes get embedded in the culture.
  2. Continue communicating once a system change has been implemented aboutw hat the successes are and why it's important to maintain the change.
  3. Recruit members to be a part of the guiding team so momentum is not lost with turnover.
  4. Maintain data collection to ensure results are reviewing regularly and the improvement is adapted to meet process goals.

Good Morning,

ASTHO is currently drafting two resources that address the role of leaders in Performance Management and Accreditation. These leadership resources provide information about the benefits and challenges of getting leadership buy-in, strategies for accrediation related issues, and guidance on creating a culture of quality improvement. They also include case studies and examples from states at various stages of performance management and accreditation and with varying competencies.

We are in the process of finalizing the leadership resources, and they will be completed by the end of June. We will make sure to share them in this forum.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to me!

These are great resources! We recently partnered with the National Institute for Children's Health Quality on a webinar titled, "Engaging Senior Leadership in Your QI Work." PHQIX Expert Panel member, Ty Kane, chimes in at the end of the webinar with three practical takeaway messages. The archived recording can be found on our Videos and Webinars page.

Thanks for the heads up, Leah. Please share those resources with us when they are available.

Laura, that webinar is a great awareness tool for understanding how to get leadership buy-in. I have attached the slides from the webinar. I also agree with the three takeaways for daily QI leadership that Ty mentioned at the end, and have listed them below:

  • Multiple yourself - QI is a (agency-wide) team effort, and can't be done by just the QI coordinator and the QI Council. Multiple QI leaders to multiple your success by investing in others (training - train the trainer, providing resources, being available for support, etc), and leading by example by modeling use of QI tools.
  • Tell good stories - Data makes you credible, but stories make you memorable! Use stories to be heard. This is the best way to make QI relevant and easy to understand. Also, practice makes perfect.
  • Keep QI simple - QI needs to be easy to understand by everyone in the agency, and can be done by using everyday language rather than complex terms. Communicate clear epectations, make QI resources easy to find, and make it known who should be contacted for further QI support.
