Assessing HEALTH’s Quality Improvement Culture

Summary

Impact Statement:
How might your health department track the trajectory and evolution of its QI and performance management system? Learn how Rhode Island Department of Health developed a survey tool to assess progress and measure QI uptake.
Summary:

In 2012, the Rhode Island Department of Health (HEALTH) introduced a quality improvement (QI) initiative and has since applied for national accreditation through the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB). HEALTH’s ultimate goal to pursue accreditation is to develop and cultivate a QI culture.

About 15 staff members are trained each year, and they identify a program performance issue to develop and complete an outcomes-based QI project 8 to 10 months after training completion.

Organization that conducted the QI initiative:

Hi,  great work!  I'm wondering how you are dealing with/planning for staff turnover.  We are experiencing high rates of staff turn-over (30% last year), due largely to retirements, and a lot of our QI knowledge is walking out the door.  Have you done any thinking or planning to address this issue? Thanks!
