Tips for re-evaluating needs?

Tue, 09/02/2014 - 13:21 -- Monica.Smith

For those of you that work with schools regularly or are in a school, what are some good tips or things that have worked for you to re-evaluate what their needs are for obesity prevention?

Hi Monica! I'm the Communications Lead for PHQIX, and it's great to meet you. I wanted to share a relevant QI Initiative that may offer some ideas for re-evaluating obesity prevention needs in schools:

Pleasant Street School 5-2-1-0: Fruits and Vegetables for School Snack Time

We also have a couple QI initiatives that focus on obesity prevention in after-school programs:

Childcare That Counts: Pilot Demonstrates Health Improvements in Quality Improvement Project

CATCH Kids Club Collaborative: Enhance the Nutrition and Physical Activity Lessons to Include and Engage Children of all Developmental Levels

I'm not sure if these resources will specifically answer your question, but I hope they are helpful. You can search for additional QI Initiatives by going to the Search page and typing in keywords like "obesity."

I would love to hear some tips on re-evaluating obesity prevention needs in schools from other PHQIX community members!

I worked for years as an evaluator in California and worked mostly with school districts. Although our focus was mostly alcohol, tobacco and other drug prevention and intervention, I think one of the most important things you can do to find out what's needed is to TALK TO STUDENTS, TALK TO STUDENT, AND TALK TO STUDENTS! Of course, you want to talk to the administration and teachers and other staff but students can provide a wealth of information on what works for them, what their concerns are around the issue, and importantly--how they'd like to help!
